What is the best treatment for bed bugs?

I brought a chair into my house that I got off the side of the road. Well, I cleaned it, and put it in my room. About a day later I started noticing insects here and there crawling on it. I noticed they were all the same. I thought they might be ticks at first, but about 3 days later now I've looked it up and I've realized they are bed bugs. What is the best remedy for them? How fast can they spread throughout my entire house?
